Safeguarding Children & Young People at Ronald McDonald House WA

At Ronald McDonald House Western Australia, the safety and wellbeing of children and young people is at the heart of everything we do. Our commitment to Safeguarding Children and Young People (SCYP) reflects our core values and responsibility to create environments where every child feels protected, respected, and supported. We actively embed safeguarding principles into our programs and culture, ensuring that every team member, volunteer and board member and understands their role in keeping children safe.

Children’s Rights

We believe every child has the right to be safe, cared for, and heard. Our approach aligns with the principles outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (PDF, 3.76MB) , which sets out the fundamental rights that all children are entitled to, including protection from harm and the right to participate in decisions that affect them.

Our SCYP Framework

Our safeguarding framework is a comprehensive collection of policies, guidelines, information and supporting materials that embed safeguarding responsibilities, culture and practices to support the safety and wellbeing of children and young people. At Ronald McDonald House WA, we all have a responsibility to:

Recognise

Recognise the signs that a child or teen may be at risk.

We provide our team members and volunteers training and embed SCYP-related expectations and considerations into role success profiles, job postings, interviews, onboarding and performance evaluations to reinforce a culture of safeguarding.

Respond

Know how to take action to help keep everyone safe.

We have people on our team called Child Safety Champions. They are here to help if something is making someone feel sad, unsafe or worried. If someone at Ronald McDonald House WA feels that way, they can talk to a volunteer or staff member, and they will find a Child Safety Champion to help.

At Ronald McDonald House WA, all team members must report, immediately, any instance, allegation, disclosure or reasonable concern of abuse or neglect of a child or young person arising from an action by an employee or volunteer within our organisation.

If a child or young person is at imminent risk of harm or in immediate danger, our team members are required to report the situation directly to the WA Police on 131 444.

Record

Capture the information to build a picture.

We maintain a secure internal safety reporting platform designed to support the proactive safeguarding of children and young people. The platform enables staff to promptly report, record, and monitor any concerns, incidents, or behaviours that may pose a risk of harm.

Policies and Resources

These policies and resources guide our practices and reinforce our dedication to child safety.
