Our Director of Hugs and Pats, Gus, took his job very seriously, from welcoming WA families into our home away from home, to posing for photos at events and visiting partners.
It is with great sadness that we share the news that Gus, Ronald McDonald House WA’s beloved House Dog, our Director of Hugs and Pats, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family.
As a valued member of the team for over a decade, Gus took his job very seriously and he was much more than a companion animal. For countless families, children, staff and volunteers, he was a source of unconditional comfort, joy and connection during some of life’s most challenging moments.
Whether he was greeting families at the front door, bringing a smile to a child undergoing treatment, or sharing a special moment with someone who simply needed a friend, Gus had a remarkable gift for making people feel safe, welcome and loved.
When a child becomes ill or injured in Western Australia and needs specialist medical care, all roads led to Perth. Many families find themselves far from home and loved ones for weeks, months and even years. For over a decade, Gus gave these families so much more than hugs and pats, he was a sense of normalcy, a best friend and a shoulder to lean on during some of the most challenging times.
Gus’s impact on our House community cannot be measured. Through his gentle nature and unwavering presence, Gus helped bring our mission to life every day, creating a sense of home and belonging for families far from their own.
We know many of you will feel this loss deeply and will have your own special memories of Gus. We encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the joy he brought into our lives and the countless families whose experiences were made brighter because of him.
At this time, our thoughts are particularly with Gus’ immediate family, whose love and dedication made it possible for so many people to experience the comfort and companionship that Gus provided.
His pawprints will forever remain part of Ronald McDonald House WA.
