National history

Providing essential services that remove barriers, strengthen families and promote healing when Australian children need healthcare.

Our first Ronald McDonald House in Australia opened in Camperdown, New South Wales in 1981, providing families with a place to stay close to their child receiving treatment in hospital.

As we opened more House Programs around the country, we expanded our essential services and in 1998 we opened the first Ronald McDonald House Family Room in Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth Western Australia, offering a comfortable space to rest within in the hospital.

In 1991 we launch the Ronald McDonald House Learning Program, supporting children who have missed months or even years of schooling due to illness or injury. This was a world-first Australian initiative to ensure that children weren’t further disadvantaged by also falling behind at school.

We are proud to celebrate over 40 years of providing essential services to thousands of families across the country.
